What the old book says (L. Dow Balliett, The Philosophy of Numbers, 1908): Harmony. 2 has no middle ground: it leans either towards spirit or towards matter. At its best it is musical and brings everything around it into tune. Balliett gives it the colour gold and the cross as its symbol, and says the upright part is the one to hold to.
Where the idea comes from
